Summit Materials wellness philosophy is to allow employees to make big changes towards better health. As a result of these programs we’ve realized many successes including increased employee satisfaction, more productivity on the job, and of course a company of healthier people. While there are so many stories, one particular employee that we’re especially proud of is Natalie Timmerman. After participating in a biometric screening, she signed up for the tobacco cessation program, and kicked the habit. See below for her testimony:
“When Summit Materials introduced their wellness program in 2014, I had been a smoker for over 30 years with no real intention to quit. When I first heard that the company was considering biometric screenings I was very skeptical. I remember thinking that I would just pay the increased insurance premium to continue smoking. I liked to smoke, plain and simple. I did, however begin to do some research about biometric screenings and learned how employers were changing people’s lives and in some cases, saving lives.
After completing the first screening, people around me began talking. They were starting contests starting to lose weight, some people were quitting chewing tobacco, and others joining gyms. I myself began to question some of my own life choices. As I looked further into the company’s wellness plan, I learned that it was structured to support employees that were working towards a goal and all I had to do to receive the monthly insurance premium discount was to try to quit smoking. I just had to participate in the tobacco cessation program, and complete it. They said the magic words, “we just hope that it gets people thinking about quitting”. Powerful words really, because that’s exactly what it did for me. It did get me thinking, but luckily it got a co-worker of mine ‘doing’.
Fast forward a year, right before the 2015 wellness screenings a co-worker and their spouse came into my office and told me about this wonderful procedure they had done that enabled them to quit smoking. They knew that I was a smoker and they thankfully shared their experience with me and today I’m tobacco free as well. I am blessed that they saw the bigger picture, took their life in their hands, and shared their experience with me.
Honestly, not a work day goes by that I don’t hear from a mom, dad, grandpa, grandma or friend making a change to their life and I know for a fact that it’s because of our wellness programs. The entire Summit team should be so proud of this program… it’s getting people thinking, talking, and doing. It’s really made a difference!”
