Ensuring Employees and Their Communities Can Thrive

Our employees are the heart of our business and the foundation of our success. We’re dedicated to building stronger communities wherever we operate, creating meaningful impact in the places we call home every day.

Summit is powered by approximately 7,000 dedicated employees whose impact reaches beyond our business to their families, our customers, and the communities we serve. We’re committed to initiatives that attract, retain, and develop top, diverse talent to fuel organic growth and innovation, while carefully considering our broader community impact. Our focus includes advancing our performance in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), enhancing employee engagement, ensuring pay equity, and refining our talent acquisition, recruitment, and retention strategies.

Our People

Our people are foundational to our success. We believe strong employee engagement helps foster a culture of innovation and creative decision making, allowing us to identify new solutions to create long-term value. Creating an inclusive culture is not only a core value but is a continuous journey that is fundamental to our success.

We have made conscious strides to address DE&I within our business, and our near-term strategy includes the following goals:

Goal 1

Reduce employee turnover from 45% in 2021 to 30% by 2030 and 20% by 2050.

Goal 2

75% participation for the identified audiences for DE&I-specific training, equitable compensation and talent acquisition.

Goal 3

60% of employee base reflects communities for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Goal 4

Increase overall employee engagement.

At Summit, diversity, equity, and inclusion are core to who we are, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment at every level. Respect is a fundamental value and a shared responsibility among all Summit employees.

We are advancing our DE&I strategy led by our RISE Initiative to identify and remove barriers to recruitment, training, development, and career growth. Our zero-tolerance policy toward intolerance reflects our dedication to creating a respectful and inclusive workplace—from our drivers and operations teams to management and our Board of Directors.

Achieving Our Social Impact Goals

We’re committed to building a workplace that attracts and retains top talent, prioritizes employee well-being, fosters inclusivity and respect, and supports meaningful growth and development.

We have several initiatives underway to reduce turnover, improve diversity and enhance employee engagement, including:

We prioritize leadership development as a core foundation for our 500 frontline leaders, equipping both current and emerging leaders with the skills and confidence to excel. This program builds strengths in organizational leadership, personal effectiveness, team engagement, and developing strong, capable teams.

We are expanding our learning and development programs to support employees in achieving their career and work-life goals, fostering constructive feedback, embracing innovation and best practices, and preparing for future career advancements.

We are launching an employee stock purchase program to build a culture of ownership, allowing employees to share in Summit’s success. Employee-investors are empowered to engage more deeply, make decisions that align with our stakeholders’ best interests, and gain a stronger understanding of Summit’s strategic goals and financial performance

We are standardizing our job architecture framework with best practices to strengthen the foundation for effective human capital management. This framework will support talent mobility, pay equity, career progression, workforce planning, and succession management, enhancing both lateral and upward growth opportunities for our team.

Safety Center of Excellence (COE)

Summit is committed to driving value through innovation and adaptability. To support this, we’ve established a Safety Center of Excellence (COE) to uphold the highest safety standards and foster a zero-harm culture across our operations. Our 5S workplace organization tool—Sort, Simplify, Shine, Standardize, Sustain—ensures clean, organized environments that enhance hazard recognition. With robust protocols in place, adoption of these practices is essential to protecting our people, our colleagues, and our communities.

Health and Safety

Health and safety are at the core of who we are. Our disciplined approach to safety includes daily progress tracking and benchmarking against best practices to drive continuous improvement. We also offer a comprehensive employee wellness program to support long-term health, helping employees and their families lead fulfilling lives together.

Employee Wellness

We are dedicated to creating a workplace that attracts and retains top talent, prioritizes employee well-being, fosters inclusivity and respect, and supports meaningful growth and development.

Community Engagement

Summit Materials and our family of companies are deeply connected to the communities we serve. Our roots run deep, beginning with a coalition of family-owned, community-focused businesses that have thrived through local partnerships and trust. At Summit, we honor the unique cultures and relationships of each of our operating companies.

Our commitment to community impact is evident through local initiatives designed to make a real difference—whether it’s volunteering at food banks, organizing educational programs for students, or leading highway cleanups. We believe we’re an essential part of each community we serve, and we strive to create a lasting positive impact in every place we live, work, and play.

Partnering with Local Communities

We actively engage with the communities where we operate by listening, learning, and welcoming constructive feedback on our operations. Summit values the unique culture of each of our companies, fostering strong local partnerships that support our communities.

Contributing to sustainable cities and communities is essential to our business model and core values. We’re committed to making a positive impact and aligning our programs and goals with the needs of all communities and stakeholders.
